Tutorial 4.3 Soluble vs Insoluble Fibre

Fibre may be classified as soluble or insoluble:

Soluble Fibre
  • Soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance in the colon.
  • It helps slow down digestion, which can aid in blood sugar control.
  • Soluble fibre is known for helping to manage cholesterol levels and lowering the risk of heart disease.
Insoluble Fibre
  • Insoluble fibre does not dissolve in water and remains mostly whole as it passes through your digestive tract.
  • This type of fibre adds bulk to your stool, helping you keep your digestive tract healthy and bowel movements regular.
  • Insoluble fibre can support insulin sensitivity.
Most plants contain both soluble and insoluble fibre, but in different amounts. Both types of fibre are important for health, but each performs a different role within your body.
