Tutorial 5.2 Sugar Substitutes

There are several healthy substitutes for sugar that you can consider:
  1. Stevia: A natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the South American shrub Stevia rebaudiana. It contains zero calories and can be up to 450 times sweeter than sugar.
  2. Xylitol: A sugar alcohol with a sweetness similar to that of sugar. It is extracted from corn or birch wood and found in many fruits and vegetables.
  3. Erythritol: Another sugar alcohol that tastes almost exactly like sugar, but it contains only 6% of the calories.
  4. Yacon Syrup: Contains one-third of the calories of regular sugar. It is also very high in fructooligosaccharides, which feed the good bacteria in the gut and may aid weight loss.
  5. Honey, Maple Syrup, and Molasses: These natural sweeteners contain beneficial components, such as enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates, that the human body knows how to process.
  6. Fruit Purees: Certain natural sweeteners like banana puree and date paste provide health benefits, such as encouraging healthy blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels and heart disease risk, thanks to their fiber content.
Remember, even though these are healthier alternatives, they should still be consumed in moderation.
